What it means to be a member
Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization, which means that members are expected to maintain a high level of moral character, academic or professional achievement, and a commitment to participate and contribute to the organization. Students accepted into the School of Accountancy at BYU are already expected to have integrity and high academic standards. In the sections below, you will see what kind of commitment is expected of our members at BYU.As a chapter, we want to give our members the opportunities associated with membership in a professional organization, very similar to the organizations you will likely be a part of as a leader in the accounting profession and the community. Becoming an active member of Beta Alpha Psi will give you professional and leadership experience and an opportunity to make an impact in the community.
How to Become a Member
There are a few steps involved to become a fully initiated member of Beta Alpha Psi.
Become a Candidate
- You must be accepted into the Accounting, Finance, or Information Systems program.
- Pay dues on the Marriott School website (link here) - $70 (This includes a $65 one-time fee for the national association and an annual $5 fee for the local chapter)
- To be initiated Fall Semester, dues must be paid by October 31, 2013.
- Request an invitation to the BAP course on canvas by filling out this Google form
*Enrollment opens twice a year--September and January
Member Requirements
Minutes Requirements - members are required to achieve a specified level of participation each academic year to achieve and retain membership. This includes:- 800 Professional minutes (with up to 250 minutes of non-BAP sponsored professional activities) - Professional minutes are minutes participated in professional development and networking events. This includes weekly professional presentations (the weekly Thursday meeting), Meet the Firms, Meet the Interns, etc. Non-BAP sponsored professional activities include events with a professional presentation or networking (such as pre-interview networking socials).
- 800 Service minutes (with up to 250 minutes of non-BAP sponsored service activities) - Service minutes include time participated in community service projects. A few examples of BAP-sponsored service events are Volunteer Income-Tax Assistance (VITA), Lightning Peak service, the Deloitte Sub-for-Santa, Habitat for Humanity, and others. Non-BAP sponsored service activities include activities that serve the community (not individuals, i.e. your ward activity cleaning the park counts, but home teaching or helping your neighbor move does not).
All minutes must be reported using the BAP course on canvas along with the membership application.
Initiation - New members may become initiated at the end of Fall and Winter semesters and must participate in the initiation ceremony. If you cannot attend the ceremony, please contact one of the officers to make other arrangements.
*Candidates who wish to become initiated after their first semester need only attain half of the required minutes for the year (e.g. If a candidate pays dues in August and would like to be initiated in December, the candidate only needs to have 400 minutes each of professional and service participation.)

Canvas Reporting
This year we are going to be using Canvas to record the professional and service minutes you complete during the year. This is a "how-to" guide to help you on your way.
Event Reporting
Most events put on by Beta Alpha Psi, such as Meet the Firms, Grant Thorton 5k, etc., require you to self-report the minutes you attended each event. For each event there will be an assignment on Canvas that you can find on the calendar, or under the Beta Alpha Psi course on the Assignments tab. These assignments consist of four questions. The first asks you to record the number of minutes you attended the event for. The second asks you to rate the event. The third and fourth ask for positive/improvement feedback. These assignments will be available directly following their respective events. They will always be available after that and can be taken as many times as you need.
Non-BAP Minutes
For professional/service events that you attend throughout the year that are not sponsored by Beta Alpha Psi, there are two assignments on Canvas (one for professional, one for service) to report these minutes through. These are always available and can be taken as many times as you need in order to update them for each non-BAP activity you participate in. Please be aware that these two assignments are to record total non-BAP minutes and will not save or add to your previous answers. The first question asks for totalnon-BAP professional/service minutes participated in throughout the year. The second question asks you to record the activities you participated in and list the minutes corresponding to each activity. For each subsequent time you update this assignment, we recommend copying and pasting your answer to the second question from your last update into your current update, and then adding the new activity and its minutes to the list. Guidelines for appropriate activities, and examples, are included in the instructions and the first question of each assignment.
Weekly Meeting Minutes
Before each weekly meeting you swipe your student ID card or enter your student ID number on a laptop right outside the door. The recorders will then use the data from the card reader to enter the number of minutes you attended the meeting for on Canvas. You will not need to report these minutes yourself.
VITA Minutes/Other Card Reader Events
The VITA lab, and sometimes other events, uses card readers to record the amount of time you worked in the lab or attended the event. The recorders will take the data from the card reader and enter the number of minutes you worked/attended the event for on Canvas. You will not need to report these minutes yourself.
Unfortunately, there is no way to get a point total for the professional or service assignments on Canvas. The percentage score is not an accurate reflection of your progress toward achieving the total minutes. In order to calculate your recorded minutes, you will need to manually add up the points on Canvas. These can be found on the Grades tab.
If you have any problems recording your minutes, or any questions concerning Canvas or minutes, please feel free to contact us at byubap@gmail.com .
